Carapace

Two years have passed…

I hate choosing, I really do!
That was what I was thinking exactly two years ago.
For the first time I had to choose between two men, a wealthy one, Anura Perera, and a cook on the beach, Vijay.
Now that I look at the past I can see clearly that I had no reason to think about making a choice, because that question had an obvious answer.
But the turning point happened that day, when Mr Perera would come for our first date. If I remember it correctly, the telephone rang and it was Vijay asking me to have a dinner with him. I can still remember hearing the sea through the phone. I didn’t give him an answer. After all, what would I do? All my family was waiting for Mr Perera arrival… And Vijay was waiting for me…
He wouldn’t call me again. It was up to me to decide what to do.
Slowly and completely lost in my thoughts I went back to ironing my jade green saree. I was doing everything automatically, like a machine, and my thoughts were far away…
Like awaking from a dream, I found myself walking along the beach, with the sea’s smell embracing me.
A few steps forward, we could see Vijay’s Beach Hut. But something was different that night. While I was getting closer, I could see it better.
The Beach Hut was only being enlightened by a few candles disposed at the centre of a beautifully arranged table.
I kept walking towards that amazing view, but it seemed that I would never reach it. I wanted to get closer, but my feet wouldn’t move.
Suddenly Vijay was standing at the Beach Hut door, and as if he knew what I was feeling, he came to me and took me gently by the hand.
I felt I was being treated like a child that couldn’t do anything for herself. He would put the food in my plate, poured the wine, which felt especially sweet that night. But on the other hand it felt really good to be the centre of his attention.
Despite all that happiness I was feeling, I couldn’t look in his eyes. It was like all gravity was focused on my head, keeping me from looking at him.
It was while I was thinking about this that Vijay’s gentle hand slowly raised my head and he gave me a soft kiss. A long kiss that, in its innocence, totally contrasted with the cold night air.
Two years have passed since that day, the day that absolutely changed my life. My all body and soul chose for me to be with him, and there certainly couldn’t be bigger joy.
Every single day is spent at the Beach Hut, which is already my home. I get to feel the ocean breeze that I love so much, in my country that I also love.
The family that once supported with all their strength my marriage with a total stranger, now love the man I chose and love so deeply.
Like a fairytale everybody tells that can’t happen in real life, I feel I can live happily ever after.

The mysterious hitchhiker

The scary next day…

A narrow street that seems to never end… a mysterious smile… a dark doorway… a whisper… “Come… don’t leave me alone… please!!”
Carlo woke up scared, everything was spinning around. What was that dream?
The mysterious encounter with that girl the day before seemed normal before, so why was him having that dream?
Confused, he started thinking about it, the sad looking girl, the thin dress she was wearing on a cold day…
Something inside was telling him not to go, but he wanted to now, he wanted to see her again and find out if that pale and beautiful face was really that scary.
Although hesitating, he left the room and entered the car. It was a really cold day… where did he put his jacket? Oh that’s true… he gave it to the girl… now he had a reason to look for her… Wait… what was that?
Something or somebody was standing by the side of the road. Carlo pulled and slowly walked to the known figure.
When he got close to her, she slowly turned around.
“DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE!!!”
It was no longer a whisper and the face was no longer the same.

Carapace - Two Years Later

Two years passed since that fateful day that would change my life forever.

Here I am sitting on the sofa, waiting for my husband to come home from work and have dinner with me. He doesn’t like to eat my food so I learned to cook the things that he loves most.

I’m so tired of my life! I go out just to buy food for the next few days. He’s never home. He has better things to do than be with me. And I never loved him…

Amma chose my life instead of me. She thought that this marriage would make me happier and that I would have a better life than she had with my father who died the day I was born. But, besides that, I only had two options. One of them was to live with a rich man that had a beautiful house, a good job and was living in Australia. The other option was to live with a poor man that was a cook on the beach and who I loved…

I miss Amma and Vijay a lot. I can’t phone them because I’m not allowed to. Besides, we don’t talk a lot. I’m just the housewife.

The only thing that makes me dream for a better life is to look at the sea through the window. Just to remember those days at the Beach Hut when I saw Vijay peeling some prawns for our dinner. We were so happy together! Why didn’t I do anything to stay with him? Well, it was only in my hands the choice of having a better life with money or love. I chose money… But, I still know his number by heart: Mount Lavinia 926979.

Carapace Part 2 - A Life of Lies

It’s never too late, is it?

It’s been quiet, almost too quiet… My life has changed quite a lot since I’ve left my beloved hometown… I now reside in Australia, a continent I’m not quite familiarized with… and share my life with a man I don’t like at all… I miss my mother… I miss my simple life… I miss the beach… and I miss Vijay…
It’s been two years since that dramatic day… The day I’ve left the only thing that kept me alive in this world… My roots, and my love… my true love! Not this person I share my bed every night!
I’ve never seen my mother again. I know she’s alright, because Anura keeps sending checks to her once a month, and they haven’t been refunded. I’ve never heard about Vijay since we talked at the telephone. I don’t know how he is, and what he's up to. If he still loves me, or has moved ahead remains unknown to me… But I still miss him…
Maybe I should let go… Maybe I should accept things has how they are… Sure, I should consider myself a lucky girl, being able to live a life of luxury, and I know many people would die to live as good as I do… but at what cost? I don’t associate myself in any way with this nightmare… this web of lies…
If only I could make a stand… to be an example for women everywhere… to actually rise over the ashes and charge into my dreams… But, I’m too weak, not physically, but mentally…
My life with Anura usually revolves around taking care of the house, making meals, tiding each and every room until he arrives at later at night. By then he surprises me with sparkly things, or furry coats... But, to be honest, he never surprised me at all! I feel as if I’m being paid to be “his” wife… a belonging, something you use and get rid of…
One day, I will take what’s rightfully mine… not the objects hanged on the coat hangers, or in the black boxes, but the life I’ve lost and hope to attain…
It’s never too late… is it?

Cosplay... my hobby

Since you are so merry and happy posting random things XD I'll talk about this hobby of mine, Cosplay.
What is cosplay? Cosplay comes from costume play, where we dress as characters from our favorite movies, books, videogames, anime/manga or when you create an original costume.
Let your emagination flow and the results will be amazing.
Now, some photos from some of my cosplays... By the way, Patricia in Ripatasirana ( I think I got it right) cosplays too and paired once and did a play, a dramatic play ;__;

My first cosplay, Chris Redfield from Resident Evil 1: Remake
I was young, so don't look at my young ugly face XD joking

My second cosplay, Seifer Almasy from Final Fantasy VIII... Sorry, I couldn't find any photos of me :X

Third cosplay, Spike from Buffy the vampire slayer

My forth one, The one I enjoyed so much, Ichigo Kurusaki from Bleach.
I don't have the orange hair, because the wig didn't come on time... internet orders... bah
And yes, my sword is huge too, 1.74cm \o

Next cosplay, Naked Snake from Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater

The one that I enjoyed and won two prizes!

My last cosplay, the one who I identify the most:

Aizen Souske, Bleach and Dar (my girfriend as Hinamori Momo)

That's it.

I'm working on more and improve its quality ^^

1. Olá Love 2 Dance

Olá Love 2 Dance is a musical event which moves all the House Music’s lovers in Portugal. The performances of this event have been getting better and better since its first edition: spectacular performances in charge of a group of great dancers, spectacular scenes and stages, the best DJ’s of the world and powerful multimedia productions that hadn’t been seen before. It has already won two awards of the most respected Portuguese magazines Dance Club and Portugal Night for the Best Event.

Even today, thousands of people don’t miss one single edition of this festival and they all share the same passion for House Music.

This event is annual and occurs on the first days of May. It's located on Pavilhão Atlântico, Parque das Nações in Lisbon and has a duration of eight hours of non-stop House Music.

1.1. Olá Love 2 Dance (3rd May 2003)

In 2003, the Olá’s ice-cream franchising organized the biggest House Music’s event ever made in Portugal in which appeared some of the best DJ’s in that year like Roger Sanchez and Todd Terry. The other great DJ’s were Silicone Soul, Big Louie G, Carlos Manaça, Luís Leite, Diego Mirand, Miss Blondie, and McGovern.

1.2. Olá Love 2 Dance In The Sky (1st May 2004)

In 2004, Olá Love 2 Dance was In The Sky! It was all about the experience of flying and the 2nd Edition of this event started literally In The Sky, with a airplane which flew from Oporto to Lisbon on the day of the event. The airplane landed near Pavilhão Atlântico and immediately after that, the event started with the rhythm of the best international DJ’s like Deep Dish, DJ Sneak, and François Kevorkian and the best national DJ's like Carlos Manaça, Luís Leite, Diego Miranda, and Miss Blondie. Also, there was the biggest screen ever seen on Portugal, two dance stages and zones of entertainment which included flight simulators and a planetarium.

1.3. Olá Love 2 Dance In Wonderland (14th May 2005)

In 2005, Olá Love 2 Dance was In Wonderland and its slogan was "We will transport you to a new, magical and unknown world where everything is possible and nothing is like it seems...”.

It was on the 3rd Edition that thousands of people discovered that coloured world with the sound of the best DJ’s of that time like DJ Tiësto, Steve Lawer, Behrouz, John Creamer, Carlos Manaça, Pete Tha Zouk, and Diego Miranda.

1.4. Olá Love 2 Dance Around The World (6th May 2006)

In 2006, Olá Love 2 Dance was Around The World – a cosmopolitan and urban world in which everybody dances without embarrassment!

On the 4th Edition of the event was represented by DJ’s from a lot of countries: from Netherlands, Sander Kleinenberg; from United States of America, Low End Specialists; from United Kingdom, DJ Sasha; from Japan and Spain, Plastik Funk; from Brazil, DJ Gabo; from Italy, Luca Ricci; and from Portugal, Pete Tha Zouk.

2. Super Bock Super Rock

The creation of Super Bock Super Rock's Festival in 1995 had a huge impact on the Portuguese musical scene. As a precursor of the present Portuguese Summer Festivals, this event was the only one that was held for eleven years and put Portugal on the route of the greatest European Summer Festivals.

The history of this event has been characterized all over the years by its capacity of innovation, dynamism and adaptation. By that, it gained the fame of being a “chameleon” festival and a font of revelation to Portuguese bands. It also opened a door to international bands and made a progress on the musical scene throughout conferences and workshops.

The first editions of Super Bock Super Rock have permitted a closer contact to Portuguese audience, in a way to know better their profile, their passions and their behavior, helping to segment the Festivals on a better way to a public even more informed and selective.

In 2002, the event started to occur in enclosed areas and in others cities: Coimbra, Vigo and Madrid (this one happened in 2003); even the dates of the event were changed, making difference to the rest of the Portuguese Summer Festivals by moving away from the Summer season to another year’s season totally inedited for the realization of other Summer Festivals.

In 2004, Super Bock Super Rock changed its format again and the event started with three days of Rock on open air in Parque Tejo, Parque das Nações, near to Vasco da Gama's bridge, in Lisbon. On the same year, the event started to occur on February in Luanda, Angola.

In 2006, in the middle of the Two Acts of the event, happened the Festa da Cerveja (Beer Party, in English) between 28th May and 5th June and it was free entry to everyone that wanted to drink beers and taste gastronomic delicacies.

3. Rock In Rio

Rock In Rio is a festival which was organized by the Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina.
Rock In Rio I was realized for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 1985 on an area which had been constructed specially for the event. The area that stays in the neighbourhood of Japarepaguá became known as the “City of Rock” (“Cidade do Rock”) and counted with the biggest stage of the world which was equal to five Woodstock’s Festivals.
The fame of the event happened with the fact that, at that time, the biggest international musicians and groups had never been to South America and, for the first time, Brazilians would see their pop and rock idols closely.

Thanks to the enormous success of the first event, Medina promoted Rock In Rio II in 1991 which was established in Maracanã’s Football Stadium.

After a new gap, Rock In Rio III was realized in 2001 and was established on the same local of the first event. There were created others tents like “Electro Tent” (electronic music), “Brazilian Tent” (Brazilian popular music), “Roots Tent” (African music), and “Better World Tent" (international music). This event has received the name “For a Better World” which was marked on the first day of the event with a symbolic act of five minutes of silence before the first music act. This symbolic act represented the request for world peace.

The next Rock In Rio IV is going to be realized again in 2014 because the World Cup will happen in Brazil.

This event internationalized for the first time in 2004 with Rock In Rio Lisbon. The organization chose Lisbon’s Bela Vista Park to build the “City of Rock”. The support was successful and the money of sold tickets was collected for helping Portuguese social institutions. On this event was a “World Stage” where international and national musicians and groups were going to act and were created other tents like “Electronic Tent” (electronic music), “For a Better World Tent” (documentaries and seminaries for the world peace), and “Roots Tent” (world music).

Some days later from the first event in Lisbon, Medina says to the press that "Rock In Rio Lisbon has come to stay!" and realized the second event in 2006. On this event were new things to discover like the “Kids Area” (where you could leave your children that someone from the organization would take care of and they would have fun activities to do), “Radical Area” (where were lots of sports activities like snowboard and they had workshops for those sporting events), "Hot Stage" (for the acts of the new talented national and international musicians or groups), and "VIP Tent" (reserved for famous personalities where they could have comfort and beauty treatments to do and the most delicious Portuguese gastronomy from a biogourmet menu).

In 2008, it’s planned to have Rock In Rio in Lisbon, Madrid, and Spain.

Portuguese Legends

Portugal is a country full of legends and small stories that once were told from parents to children, and are still in the small villages.
Every region has its legends and they sure are many…

Legend of St. Engrácia sites (Lisbon)

Simon Pires, a new-Christian, would ride every day to St. Claire’s Convent, in order to secretly see Violante. The young lady had been made a nun by force, according to her wealthy father’s will, once that he didn’t approve of their love. One day, Simon asked his lover to run away with him, giving her one day to decide. The next day Simon was awaked by the king’s men who had come to arrest him under the accusation of stealing the relics of St. Engrácia church, which was near the convent. Not wanting to bring harm to Violante, Simon didn’t reveal the reason of his presence at the crime scene. Although he would claim his innocence, he was arrested and sentenced to die in the bonfire that would take place next to St. Engrácia church, the sites of which had already begun. When the fire reached Simon’s body he shouted that, as certain as he was innocent, the church would never be finished. Years went by and the nun Violante was one day called to assist the last moments of a thief who had requested her presence. The thief revealed to her that he had been the author of the relic’s robbery and knowing the secret relationship between them had incriminated Simon, he asked for her forgiveness and Violante gave it to him. Meanwhile, a unique fact was occurring: the church that had begun in construction when Simon had been executed didn’t seem to be finished. They took so long that the people started to compare everything that takes a long time to be solved to the building of St. Engrácia.

Legend of the Enchanted Hole or of the House of the Enchanted Moor (Lisbon)

In the range of Sintra, next to the Moors Castles, there is a rock with a crack on it. Tradition tells that it marks the entrance to a hole that has connection with the castle. It’s known as the Hole of the Moor or the Enchanted Hole and it’s connected with a legend of the times when the Moors held sway over Sintra and the Christians would frequently attack it. In one of those combats a noble knight was made prisoner for whom Zaida, the alcayde’s daughter, fell in love for. Day after day, Zaida would visit the noble knight until the day he was ransomed. The passionate knight asked Zaida to run away with him but Zaida refused, asking him not to forget her. The noble knight returned to his family but a great sadness consumed his days. He tried to forget Zaida in the battlefields, but after many nights without sleeping he decided to attack Sintra’s castle once again. It was during a combat that the two lovers fell in each other’s harms, but fate or bad luck wanted the noble knight to fall injured. Zaida dragged her lover through a secret passage to a hidden room in the caves and, while she was filling a pitcher with spring water to take to her lover, she was hit by an arrow and fell injured. The Christian knight approached to his lover’s body and their blood mixed, being both of them found some time later, lifeless. Since that time in some moon light nights, a beautiful lady appears near the hole wearing white clothes and filling a pitcher with water, disappearing in the night after a painful groan.

Legend of Machico or the Immortal Love (Madeira)

In the British court of King Edward the Third, used to live a man of plebian blood and noble soul, Robert Machim, who had as best friend and brother in arms the nobleman Sir George. Robert Machim was a sensitive man and had the gift of words. Because of that, sir George asked him to go with him to wait for the arrival of his young and beautiful cousin Ana de Harfet, which Sir George wanted to impress. Only a few glances and words exchanged between Ana de Harfet and Roberto Machim were needed to appear a love so intense that it resigned itself sincerely Sir George. But Ana de Harfet’s parents did not accept her union with a claimant of so low lineage and ordered Ana's marriage with one of the court’s noblemen. Robert Machim did not accept his anger or his intention to fight for Ana and was arrested under the king’s order for a few days, while the wedding ceremony would take place. By the time he left prison, his loyal friend Sir George was waiting for him and told him that Ana was dying of love. With Sir George's help, Ana and Robert escaped on a boat towards France, but a brutal storm diverted them for an idyllic island. Ana didn’t resist the fever she caught during the storm and was buried in the beautiful island. It is told that Robert Machim died on the top of the gravestone of his beloved and was buried in it by his friend. A huge love that was forever remembered through Robert's name in the pretty town of Machico, in the Island of the Madeira, pretense island where the two lovers that passed to the Portuguese chronic docked.

Legend of the Roses’ miracle (Coimbra)

This is one of the most known Portuguese legends. It elevates Queen Isabel goodness for all her subjects, to whom she would give money and soothing words. History tells that a spiteful noble informed the king D. Dinis that the queen was spending too much money in church works, donations to convents, charities and other actions of charity and convinced him to put an end to these excesses. One morning, the king decided to surprise the queen when she was going with her retinue to St. Claire’s sites and to the usual money distribution and he noticed that she was trying to hide what she was taking in her lap. Questioned by D.Dinis, the Queen informed him that she was going to decorate the monastery’s altars, so he insisted that he had been informed that the Queen had disobeyed his prohibitions, giving money to the poor. Suddenly and more confident, Queen Isabel answered: “You are wrong, Royal Lord. What I have in my lap are roses…” Angered by this the king accused her of lying: How could she have roses in January? Then he forced her to show the content of her lap. Before the frightened eyes of all, Queen Isabel showed the most beautiful branch of roses that she was guarding under the veil. The King became speechless, convinced that he was before a supernatural phenomenon and he ended up asking the Queen for forgiveness. The Queen proceeds in her intent to take the money to charity. The news about the miracle ran all over the city of Coimbra and the people proclaimed her saint, the Queen Isabel of Portugal.

Portuguese Northern food

All of the Portuguese gastronomy bathed in the ancient culture is very rich and very tasty.

Specially the northern gastronomy, such as the Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá, and other cod fish (bacalhau in Portuguese) recipes.

What about the famous Papas de Sarrabulho from Minho? You got to taste that, so many dishes, so little time, so let me sum up the best dishes of the northern area of our beautiful country.

Let us start by the Beira Alta, what have we got here? Starting with the soup Rancho à Moda de Viseu, following the main dish Bacalhau Assado com Batatas à Murro or Leitão Recheado à Moda da Beira Alta, of course there’s plenty to choose from!

From soups, to fish to meat and to those lovely desserts, northern food can't stop surprising us.

Next, Trás-os-Montes, where we can find the best soups ever, Caldo de Cebola, Rancho and Sopa de Alheiras among others.

The famous Cozido à Portuguesa resides here! And after this fine meal, relax and sweet your lips with Papos-de-Anjo de Mirandela, not only this, but with many more sweets.

Finally Minho now, where cod dishes are everywhere like Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá, Bacalhau à Lagareiro, Bacalhau à Luziamar, Bacalhau à Margarida da Praça and
Bacalhau à Zé do Pipo, etc, the very well known and before mentioned Papas de Sarrabulho.

Of course I didn’t mentioned all of the dishes neither the recipes. For the recipes or to know more about northern food, follow the link below.

As you can see, Portugal is full of delicaties!
